What Are the Commonly Used Buddhist Symbols?

Budha ArtThe spirituality Buddhism offers is one of peace and contentment. Buddhist symbols have become increasingly popular in the last ten years. Many decorators now incorporate some of the Buddhist materials when they are decorating. Rather, they are used to bring others in touch with Buddhist art and the teachings that Buddhists practice.

One of the most prevalent Buddhist symbols is the Buddha statue. Most followers of the Buddhist practice possess one of these statues as a reminder of the Buddha. You can always find the big Buddha bellied statues at many consignment stores and shops. It seems as if the "laughing" Buddha is a novelty that many Western collectors love to have in their collections.

One symbol that has made its way into the jewelry industry is the chant "Om Mani Padme Hum." You can now find necklaces and rings with this chant inscribed in Sanskrit. Buddhists use this chant to reach a higher state of meditation. Buddhists chant and pray by counting each bead and saying a prayer.

The number of traditional beads used by a Tibetan Buddhist is 108 and this equals the number of mantras said by the user.eBay has many stores that sell traditional artifacts. You can buy the traditional Buddha statue, rings that bear the chant "Om Mani Padme Hum" or even find prayer beads carved from fragrant woods and bones.

The Buddha Statue -- Symbolism and History

Budha StatueSiddhartha Gautama was the founder of Buddhism and is the figure represented by the Buddha statue. He was an Indian prince who lived from 563 to 483 B.C. Buddhism is a religious philosophy that, unlike many other traditional religions does not believe in a personal God that punishes our wrong-doings and rewards our good deeds individually. It was originally begun as an atheistic philosophy. It is based on the Noble Eightfold path and the Four Truths. The Buddha statue represents the "Enlightened One." The Four Noble Truths are: that suffering is part of life, craving is what causes suffering, the suffering stops when the craving stops, and that the only way to conquer the cravings and suffering is to follow the Noble Eightfold Path.

The First Statue

It is believed that the first Buddha statue was not created until four or five hundred years after the death of Buddha out of respect. Therefore, the statues are not an exact replication of the person and there is no "right way" to represent him. The artist had artistic freedom of expression in that area. But, there are certain characteristics and symbolic elements that you will find at least one of in every Buddha statue.

• If the hands are resting in the lap this represents meditation.

• The hands crossing over the chest are a symbol of Dharma-or a state of "being."

• In the earliest Buddha statue, the figure has both hands raised with the ring finger on the left hand touching the thumb and the index finger on the right hand is touching the thumb to make a circle with the three other fingers held aright. It is not certain what this symbolizes.

Antique German Dolls – a Little Bit of History

Antique dollDelicate exacting colorations made every one of these dolls a work of art. These dolls are rare and valuable. Parian Bisque led to the more common China Head Dolls. These dolls were mass produced, and have a shiny glaze finish over the plain untinted bisque. These dolls ranged in size from tiny 1" tall frozen charlotte type dolls to large as 24". In the early 1890's the German doll manufacturers began mass producing many lovely quality dolls that began to rival the quality of the French dolls.

Dolls began to be modelled after real children. The famous period of the "dolly type" face was born. Fine mohair wigs, or human hair wigs were also used on these dolls. The more famous German doll manufacturers such as Heinrich Handwerck, Heuback-Kopplesdorf, Kammer and Reinhard, J.D.Kestner, Armand Marseille and Simon and Halbig, clearly placed their hallmark, and doll mold numbers onto the back of the doll's neck, making it possible to date, value and appraise many of their dolls.

One of the most famous dolls of all to come out of this period was the "Bye-Lo" baby doll. The value placed on Antique German Dolls, is based on their rarity, on the quality in craftsmanship of a particular doll, the condition of the doll, and by how much of the doll remains in original condition.
