What Are the Commonly Used Buddhist Symbols?

Budha ArtThe spirituality Buddhism offers is one of peace and contentment. Buddhist symbols have become increasingly popular in the last ten years. Many decorators now incorporate some of the Buddhist materials when they are decorating. Rather, they are used to bring others in touch with Buddhist art and the teachings that Buddhists practice.

One of the most prevalent Buddhist symbols is the Buddha statue. Most followers of the Buddhist practice possess one of these statues as a reminder of the Buddha. You can always find the big Buddha bellied statues at many consignment stores and shops. It seems as if the "laughing" Buddha is a novelty that many Western collectors love to have in their collections.

One symbol that has made its way into the jewelry industry is the chant "Om Mani Padme Hum." You can now find necklaces and rings with this chant inscribed in Sanskrit. Buddhists use this chant to reach a higher state of meditation. Buddhists chant and pray by counting each bead and saying a prayer.

The number of traditional beads used by a Tibetan Buddhist is 108 and this equals the number of mantras said by the user.eBay has many stores that sell traditional artifacts. You can buy the traditional Buddha statue, rings that bear the chant "Om Mani Padme Hum" or even find prayer beads carved from fragrant woods and bones.

The Buddha Statue -- Symbolism and History

Budha StatueSiddhartha Gautama was the founder of Buddhism and is the figure represented by the Buddha statue. He was an Indian prince who lived from 563 to 483 B.C. Buddhism is a religious philosophy that, unlike many other traditional religions does not believe in a personal God that punishes our wrong-doings and rewards our good deeds individually. It was originally begun as an atheistic philosophy. It is based on the Noble Eightfold path and the Four Truths. The Buddha statue represents the "Enlightened One." The Four Noble Truths are: that suffering is part of life, craving is what causes suffering, the suffering stops when the craving stops, and that the only way to conquer the cravings and suffering is to follow the Noble Eightfold Path.

The First Statue

It is believed that the first Buddha statue was not created until four or five hundred years after the death of Buddha out of respect. Therefore, the statues are not an exact replication of the person and there is no "right way" to represent him. The artist had artistic freedom of expression in that area. But, there are certain characteristics and symbolic elements that you will find at least one of in every Buddha statue.

• If the hands are resting in the lap this represents meditation.

• The hands crossing over the chest are a symbol of Dharma-or a state of "being."

• In the earliest Buddha statue, the figure has both hands raised with the ring finger on the left hand touching the thumb and the index finger on the right hand is touching the thumb to make a circle with the three other fingers held aright. It is not certain what this symbolizes.

Antique German Dolls – a Little Bit of History

Antique dollDelicate exacting colorations made every one of these dolls a work of art. These dolls are rare and valuable. Parian Bisque led to the more common China Head Dolls. These dolls were mass produced, and have a shiny glaze finish over the plain untinted bisque. These dolls ranged in size from tiny 1" tall frozen charlotte type dolls to large as 24". In the early 1890's the German doll manufacturers began mass producing many lovely quality dolls that began to rival the quality of the French dolls.

Dolls began to be modelled after real children. The famous period of the "dolly type" face was born. Fine mohair wigs, or human hair wigs were also used on these dolls. The more famous German doll manufacturers such as Heinrich Handwerck, Heuback-Kopplesdorf, Kammer and Reinhard, J.D.Kestner, Armand Marseille and Simon and Halbig, clearly placed their hallmark, and doll mold numbers onto the back of the doll's neck, making it possible to date, value and appraise many of their dolls.

One of the most famous dolls of all to come out of this period was the "Bye-Lo" baby doll. The value placed on Antique German Dolls, is based on their rarity, on the quality in craftsmanship of a particular doll, the condition of the doll, and by how much of the doll remains in original condition.

Brand Craftsman Tools

Craftsman and CumminsCraftman tool

By Sturat Mitchel

Mention the brand Craftsman Tools and you will get a few knowing glances. It is a well-known manufacturer of power tools and conventional hand tools. Their products can be used anywhere where there's work to be done, be it in the kitchen or out in the gardens.

Craftsman Tools offer almost everything a handyman might dream of, and then some. They have the usual assortment of drill bits, presses, electric screwdrivers, power saws and even generators. Aside from that, they sell gardening tools, such as shears, trimmers, lawnmowers and sprinklers.

The prices of these items may range anywhere from affordable to slightly expensive, depending on the tool you choose. For hand tools, the price might be cheaper, but for power tools, naturally, it would increase. But, price is of no importance when you have the tools manufactured by a company which has been in this business for almost 80 years. In fact, NASCAR recognized the quality of Craftsman Tools so much that they selected it as their official tool for races.

If value for prices is your choice, then Cummins Tools is your best bet. They are a large retailer of brand-new and reconditioned tools. They have been selling the best tools available in Kansas, Missouri and Illinois (to name a few) for over 30 years.

Now, in the age of technology, you can even order tools from Cummins Tools online. Browse their website for the best discounts and offers for brands such as DeWalt, Ryobi, Ridgid and Coleman. Best of all, you can purchase extended warranty plans for select items if you are dissatisfies with the basic warranty that comes with every tool.

Both manufacturers offer the best for their customers. Craftsman Tools showcases high end products to customers who don't mind spending extra cash and Cummins Tools sells factory reconditioned tools with lower prices and better value. Therefore, be wise to choose the best selection for yourself.

Kobalt and Ridgid Tools

Ridgit ToolBy Sturat Mitche

Recently, two names have been popping up when it comes to the next-generation power tools; Kobalt Tools and Ridgid Tools. They are relatively newcomers compared to other brands, such as Craftsman Tools, Harbor Freight Tools and Chicago Electric Tools. Being the new kids on the block, they have always been grouped together by the consumers. Because of that, they have been trying so hard to distinguish themselves from each other for the past few years. Ironically, it made them seem more identical.

Ridgid Tools happens to be one of the largest manufacturers of its kind in the country. It focuses more on power hand tools and has an entire line dedicated to plumbing. It is not an exaggeration when one says that they concentrate on producing plumbing tools, since most of their collection consists of drain maintenance, pipe and tubing tools.

Convenience is definitely a factor that Ridgid takes into serious consideration. Its stores are available globally and tools can be ordered online. Their prices are affordable and customer service friendly. You won't be disappointed when you buy Ridgid Tools.

Kobalt Tools, on the other hand, places more emphasis on the product itself. In addition to the high quality one would expect of a power tool, its tools actually look the part. If you fancy a tough-looking piece of machinery that can get the job done, go for Kobalt.

They have several lines of products, ranging from general all-purpose tools, to specialized equipment for professionals. It is also worth mentioning that every item has cordless alternatives.

Kobalt, although a bit pricey, offers high quality and maintenance. It is also highly recognizable, due to the company sponsoring NASCAR races. However, they can only be obtained at Lowe's big box home improvement retail outlets.

Handmade Memory Jewelry

Hip Handmade Memory Jewelry

Hip Handmade MemoryProjects from the editor of BeadStyle magazine Cathy Jakicic Hip Handmade Memory Jewelry is one of the newest publications from Kalmbach Books. While there, working on a beading project, she began to realize how these 2 creative endeavors were alike. The scrapbooking group was fascinated by her project and how she designed and constructed it.The result is over 25 jewelry creations that are inspired by special occasions, divided into 4 categories: milestones, hobbies, vacations and remembrances.

MILESTONES

Be sure you check out the decoupage bracelet; who thought of creating a way to remember wallpaper or paint. Yes, the mini memory book pendant was a bit too trite for me, but other scrapbookers might love the concept.

HOBBIES

I also like the pop culture project; I may have to use this to create a design for my best friend, who is dedicated movie buff. I could use movie posters and create a unique bracelet and earrings, with a slightly large set for a necklace. Cathy has a neat plan to co-op those into pendants.

VACATIONS

I enjoyed the photobook/memory book charm or bookmark project; there would be endless variations on just this project alone!

REMEMBRANCES

Cathy has different projects with photos, and a piece of cloth from your baby blanket or christening dress.

Handmade Jewelry Replenishes

Handmade Jewelry Replenishes, Expresses the Creative Impulsehandmade jewelry

Impossible to quantify, inevitable in even the most mundane of tasks, the creative spirit feeds most human efforts. A recent development in expressing the creative impulse, handmade enamel jewelry, actually has its origins in some of mankind's earliest civilizations. Handmade jewelry dates back dozens of centuries, and examples can be found among the surviving relics of the Ancient Roman and Egyptian empires.

The Creative Impulse and The Workings of Narrative

In creating jewelry that highlights both iconic and mythological symbols, the handmade enamel jewelry maker is able to incorporate narrative symbols that help the viewer's mind recognize and interpret narratives on its own. The unpredictability in this case comes from the surprise at the jewelry piece's detail, or in finding how the symbol represented on the jewelry evokes and celebrates its own particular narrative.

Enamel jewelry craftsman John Madsen says the finished product both rewards his own creative impulse but also incorporates his work into a larger story. "In making handmade enamel jewelry, you become part of the spread of the story the jewelry represents," Madsen explains.

Crafting Jewelry With A Creative Impulse In Mind

Like its close cousin, fused glass ornaments, handmade enamel jewelry is often used to fire the creative impulse. Like the tree of life pendant, a popular fused glass work of ornamental jewelry, many jewelry pieces are meant not to just to reflect the imagination of the artist but also to fire the creative and cognitive impulses within the viewer. The jewelry work itself becomes almost totemic, meant not just to adorn but also to recall their symbols' tremendous spiritual potency.

Choosing the Right Help For Your Antique Sewing Machine

Antique Sewing MachineIt does not take a lot of work or any particular knowledge to keep a sewing machine in tip top shape. In the same regard, it does not take a lot of work to restore an antique sewing machine to its original working condition.

A sewing machine is typically constructed of metal with only a small handful of moving parts. The majority of the working parts are safely enclosed within the machine and protected from the outer elements. With today's newer technology, even a very old sewing machine that is in relatively good condition can be restored and maintained.

Time Machine

The tools required to work on an antique sewing machine are very basic. An assortment of screwdrivers might be all but is needed accompanied by some quality lubricating oil made particularly for sewing machines. If your particular antique sewing machine is a family heirloom, you might have a pretty good idea of what type of condition it is actually in.

In the majority of instances, a sewing machine was used lovingly as well cared for and only put aside when it was replaced by newer models. You can learn about numerous different styles of antique sewing machines by searching on the internet. You'll find groups of antique collectors to match any type of antique object. Add oil wherever you find parts touch, particularly moving parts. Special sewing machine oil will not become gummy when exposed to the atmosphere, so it is crucial to use the right type. If various parts had to be wiped down with water, give them enough time to drive prior to applying oil. An antique machine is an excellent addition to anyone's home decor.

Buying Art Supplies at an Affordable Price

Art SuppliesArt is one of the most beloved past times. What keeps a lot of people from engaging in their favorite artistic past time more often is the cost of art supplies. It is true, most art supplies can be pretty pricey. One of the best things that you can do is wait until the supplies go on sale. This is especially true if you want to buy a pricier item, you can just watch and wait until the item goes on sale and then snatch it up then. Of course, this is not always possible, especially if you need something right now, but there are other ways to get the supplies that you need at an affordable price.

Another thing you can do is check out the weekly ads for your favorite art supply shops. Don't wait until you need something, just pick up the things that you need regularly when they are on sale. If you know that you are going to use bulk amounts of products you should buy in big quantities. You can often save 20 to 50% on products when you buy in bulk, so in the end you are paying a lot less per item than you would have if you bought them individually.

A great way to get kids art supplies as well as others is to shop online. There are a lot of wholesale art supply dealers online that will get you everything that you need for far less than you would pay locally at the retail establishments in your area.

Antique Japanese Valuables Hidden in Plain Sight

Antique JapaneseNot so long ago, it was common knowledge that one could find very old, and rare, antiques being sold in some Japanese street markets for a meager sum. Times change however, and today the value of Japanese antiques has skyrocketed. Instead of being a 'bargain' that an enthusiast or small time collector could easily afford, collecting any antique Japanese items is often a costly affair.

Still, the ever-increasing value of various items has ended up fueling the desire to unearth an antique Japanese piece that had perhaps been overlooked.

Searching for Japanese Antiques Anywhere and Everywhere

Ironically, that is the selfsame reason why there undoubtedly still are rare antique Japanese items that could be worth a lot but are simply unnoticed.

Very often, the first ports of call end up being antique shops. To a certain degree this does make sense, but nowadays many antique shops actually have their inventory professionally valued. Of course, this is the very basis of finding antique Japanese valuables that are hidden in plain sight - looking at those pieces which experts haven't had the chance to view.

For this reason, auctions that are run without having Japanese antiques valued beforehand are a treasure trove of opportunity. Many a time an unwitting seller has put up an antique piece that turned out to be extremely rare.

Antique Oak Furniture

Find Antique Oak Furniture Off The Beaten Path

Antique Oak FurnitureIf you happen to have a great love of antiques, but are just starting your collection, here are some great places to look for some great pieces. Swap Meets - Swap Meets and Flea Markets are great places to find those "diamonds in the rough" antique pieces that we are all looking for. Moving, Yard, and Garage Sales - Have spare time on the weekend? Check your local newspaper listings for these types of sales.

Auctions - Many areas have professional auction companies that can be hired to take care of the disposition of many household items for a cut of the sale. The important thing about auctions is that you need to visit the auction house during the inspection period prior to the auction and pick out the pieces that you want to bid on. Private Estate Sales - These are the Holy Grail for antique buyers. Bring your money as well.

Most of these types of sales are conducted by people that know what they are doing, but with a large estate, it's often impossible for the person to have up to date information on every single piece that is for sale. It's okay to make an offer for less than the listed price for an item, unless the conductor of the sale says otherwise, but make sure your offer is reasonable relative to the item you are interested in.

Antique Oak Chair

When You Purchase an Antique Oak Chair, Make Sure it is Not a Reproduction

By Trevor Kassulke

Antique Oak ChairMy husband and I were new to antiquing. We were looking for a fun way to spend some time together on the weekends. We had moved to North Carolina within the last year and I had noticed a lot of terrific antique shops about an hour from where we lived. Shopping for antique furniture sounded like fun and we needed to furnish some rooms in our new home.

Knowing nothing about antiques meant we had a lot to learn... That being said, the first piece we bought was a beautiful antique oak chair. I was in love with the rich detail the chair offered and the wonderful rich wood color. We brought our new/old chair home and found the perfect spot where we could display it.

After a few weeks I noticed that the chair had some slight damage and I decided to have it fixed. When I brought it to a furniture restorer I was surprised and disappointed to learn that my antique-oak-chair is a reproduction antique chair. I explained that we bought it from an antique dealer but the furniture restorer showed me how he knew the chair was a reproduction simply based on the stamp of the manufacturer.

Disappointment was written all over my face for sure. I felt as if I had been taken advantage of because we did not have a good working knowledge of antiques and the sales person must have known. The restorer asked me what I paid for the chair and he told me that I payed way too much for this reproduced antique-oak-chair.

When I got home I called my husband and told him what I had learned. We decided to go back to the shop where we got the chair to get a refund. The owner of the shop informed us that they sell reproductions as well as originals and that he was not aware that we did not know that our antique-oak-chair was a reproduction.

When I mentioned that the furniture restorer said that we had paid too much, he told us that he did not agree and that the chair was well made and sold for a good value. All I know is that the next piece we buy we are going to do a lot more research and know exactly what it is that we are getting and what we are paying for. I am shopping for antique chairs!

Gothic Art - The French Art Domination of High Gothic Era

Gothic ArtFrench Art & Architecture dominated the art scene of Europe between the twelfth to fifteenth centuries. Gothic Art matured during the High Gothic Period and found great expression in architecture. Sculpting, panel painting, illuminated manuscripts, stained glass, and frescos were the other dominant High Gothic Art forms, carrying 'Christian' & 'Secular' essence, and presented in 'Typological' format.

French Cathedrals are perhaps the greatest glory of the High Gothic Era. The "Beauvais Cathedral," built on the same principles as Chartres, was the last and the highest of all High Gothic structures. This style featured elaborate geometric designs with plate and bar tracery and structured sculpting, thereby concentrating on giving a visual treat. A breathtaking example of 'Rayonnant' Style cathedral is "Sainte-Chapelle" (1248). 'Great Rose Windows' adorning the west facades of French cathedrals are perhaps the finest achievement of 'Rayonnant' architecture. 'Rayonnant' architecture spread all over Europe, such as "The Cologne Cathedral" (1248-1880) in Rhineland Germany, and "The Leon" (thirteenth to sixteenth century) & "The Toledo Cathedrals" (1226-1493) in Spain.

Sculptures gained prominence in the High Gothic Era, as they decorated the exteriors of cathedrals and other religious monuments. Sculpting and painting witnessed radical changes during the High Gothic Period. This style came to be known as the 'International Gothic Style.' The sculpting in "The Strasbourg Cathedral" (1176-1439, Germany) presents one of the most superior works of this period. The sculptures of Pisa Baptistery Pulpit (1269) and the Siena Pulpit (1265-68) are the landmark works of Italian High Gothic Style.

Gothic Paintings took off during the High Gothic Period. They carried the influence of the 'International Gothic Style.' Christian and Romanesque frescoes colored Southern Europe, while stained glass adorned the Northern Europe.

Aladdin Lamps - Fill a Room With Elegant and Peaceful Lighting

Aladdin LampsWhen you hear the term "Aladdin Lamp", your mind probably goes directly to genies and wishes. Aladdin Lamps are much more common than one might think. The lamps are so named for—you guessed it—the story of Aladdin and his magic lamp. In the early 1900’s, the lamp’s inventor developed an alternative to the yellow, flickery light of a coal lantern. As a matter of fact, to use another Hollywood reference, many of them resemble Jeanie’s Bottle more than Aladdin’s Lamp! What goes on top can make an Aladdin Lamp very simple or extravagant. Others have tops that are more like traditional lamp shades you may be more familiar with.

Some of the most obvious placement for Aladdin Lamps is incorporated into Moroccan style decorating. Large pillows on the floor, in vibrant reds and orange colors accented by the unique design and gentle white glow given off by an Aladdin Lamp can make a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere. Another perk to this type of lighting is the ability to control the level of brightness the lamp gives off. All kerosene burning lamps are adjustable to control the amount of air that gets to the mantle, which will increase or decrease the level of light produced. However, many electric styled lamps are fitted with this same ability, think dimmer-switch, but inside a lamp.

Aladdin Lamps play a very large part in decorating when it comes to more Victorian style designs. Matching lamps on either side of the bed complete the old-world feel of the room. Aladdin Lamps may not be the most contemporary design, but that is a good thing if what you are looking for is traditional, elegant and peaceful lighting to fill the room with comfort and warmth.

Antique Japanese Pottery: Collecting the Pre-ceramic Ancient Past

Antique Japanese PotteryAge, naturally, plays a factor in the value of any Japanese antiques to collectors. More than that however, there are multiple questions regarding the quality, past owners, aesthetic beauty, and so on that can also influence the ‘prestige’ in which a given item of antique Japanese pottery is held.

Surprising as it might be, just because some antique Japanese vases or other earthenware hail from a period that pre-dates ceramic, it does not mean that they lack in beauty. Admittedly, the oldest pieces that go all the way back to the Neolithic times may have been crude, but as time passed, the art of potters in Japan grew by leaps and bounds.

Periods of Antique Japanese Pottery Before Ceramics

Right after the Neolithic, in the Mesolithic, it was the time of the Jomon pottery period. Named after its very recognizable coil-made clay structure, the Jomon antique Japanese pottery items gradually incorporated more artistic elements into their designs.

For about 10,000 years, the Jomon period continued to make steady progress in terms of the antique Japanese vases and other Japanese antiques that were produced.

Eventually, the Jomon culture itself was displaced by the Yayoi, which brought with it entirely new advances in style, patterning, design, and even manufacture. Notably, they used the potters wheel instead of just making each piece by hand.

Most of the antique Japanese pottery from this period is very simple in decorative motifs. Antique Japanese vases that have patterns involving geometric designs were particularly popular, as were other Japanese antiques that had practical applications.

After some time, even the Yayoi faded away, and from there on out, South Korean potters bringing over their own advancements, as well as the steady Chinese influence, became ever more common. In short, it set the scene for the day when porcelain would eventually be discovered by one of the Korean potters in Japan.

Due to the relative rarity and age of the old (non-porcelain) antique Japanese pottery pieces, they normally tend to be pretty valuable. Even the not so aesthetically pleasing Yayoi Japanese antiques are much sought after.

If you’re a collector, you should definitely be able to identify and differentiate between these pieces, and their more modern counterparts. After all, due to their value, if you ever stumble across antique Japanese vases or other earthenware that hails from the Yayoi or Jomon periods, you’ll want to grab it up immediately.

Japanese Antiques: War-like Beginnings of Antique Japanese China

japanese antiques Over 400 years ago, a Japanese Overlord named Toyotomi Hideyoshi mounted an attack on Korea in order to invade China. This war would, in later years, come to be known as the ‘ceramic war’ and without it, antique Japanese china may very well not exist in the way that it does today.

From this war came the many, many Korean potters who were taken prisoner and brought to Japan. As time passed, their trade flourished in Japan as they took their art to great heights. Many of the ceramic Japanese antiques that exist today were made in the kilns set up by these Korean potters.

Antique Japanese China is Discovered by a Korean

One Korean potter in particular would change the face of antique Japanese plates, bowls, cups, and so on, completely. His name was Yi Sam-pyeong, and it was he who discovered porcelain clay in Arita. Perhaps even without the ‘ceramic wars’ it would have been discovered eventually, but the circumstances could not have been any better.

Following the discovery, Arita quickly blossomed into a porcelain hub for Japan as various kilns sprouted up to take advantage of the newfound industry. Chances are, any porcelain antique Japanese plates dating back to that period were made in Arita itself.

Another War, Another Advancement for Japanese Porcelain

When successive rebellions and wars in China broke out in the 1640’s, Chinese potters fled to Japan in search of livelihood. Welcoming them with open arms, Arita kilns benefited directly from this influx, as the Chinese potters brought with them knowledge that was more valuable than any gold.

Up to this point in time, antique Japanese china was not as refined as the Chinese variety, but now, with the advancements brought over by the migrating Chinese potters, this disparity disappeared. By applying the enamel glaze method, antique Japanese plates grew more and more sought after.

Prospering enormously, porcelain changed the Japanese antiques market completely. At one point in time, it was a flourishing export for Japan, and has gone from strength to strength.

Without the wars that brought about this trade, it is entirely possible that antique Japanese china would not be the delicately beautiful craft that it is today. Equally, the artistic prowess that it is so renown for would possibly never have seen the light of day, which would definitely affect the appeal to owning it.

Gothic Art

Gothic Art - Through the Vision of the Late Gothic Art

France, especially Paris, has been the artistic center of the world, since the 1230s. In the middle of the twelfth century, at the far end of the Romanesque period, Gothic Art was born because of a Medieval Art Movement, which lasted until the Late Gothic Art in 1500 and the onset of Renaissance in 1515. Gothic style is known for its characteristic architectural arched design of its churches, its stained glass, its illuminated manuscripts, sculptures, frescos, & panel paintings. Most of these were religious in nature and brought in new perspective that were both visual and spiritual.

Three successive stages, Early, High, and Late Gothic, have been identified. Gothic Age, spanning from 1280 to around 1500 AD, was also a period of crusades, which led to increase in trade relations through the European continent. This resulted in the flow of Byzantine Art and artists to Western Europe. This movement of artistic currents brought in a new 'Naturalist' and 'Secular' style called the 'International Gothic Art.' This style manifested in the different parts of Europe during the late fourteenth and into the fifteenth century. Late Gothic Art blended the Gothic ingredients with the illusionist art of the Italian painters.

During the Late Gothic Period, the architectural style evolved into a more decorative phase, referred as the 'flamboyant phase,' which lasted until the fifteenth century. Cimabue and Giotto were a couple of most important artists of this era. During the Late Gothic phase the shape, structure, and the function of the buildings were completely hidden with decorations that covered the outer surface, as in the "Church of Saint-Maclou" in Rouen, France. The interior of the buildings were kept simple by removing pillars and replacing them with plain masonry support. Similar styles appeared in England with their 'Perpendicular Style' at the "Cathedral at Gloucester," Germany; where high passageways were favored, as in the towers of the cathedrals at "Ulm," "Strasbourg," and "Spain."

Sculptures and painted glass are closely related to the Gothic Architecture. Both decorated the outer surfaces of cathedrals and other religious buildings. During the Later Gothic Period, the art style had become increasingly 'Naturalistic' & mellow with distinct faces and figures. The Late Gothic Sculptures of the "Reims Cathedral" in France; the facades of "Bamberg," "Strasbourg," and "Naumbourg" Cathedrals," in Germany; Italian Gothic Sculptures of Scaliger Tombs (1345-59), Verona, Italy; and the works of Giovanni Pisano in Siena & Pistoia, & of Lorenzo Maitani at Orvieto, all endorse the excellent Late Gothic Art. By the late fifteenth century, sculptors started their own workshops in towns & they were more organized into guilds or fellowships.

Mostly religious in essence, the Gothic Art included 'Typological' presentation of "New & Old Testaments," such as in "Speculum Humanae Salvationis" of 1300s. Virgin Mary acquired a benevolent mother's look with increased human essence, like "Life of the Virgin." Christian and Roman styled Late Gothic Frescoes decorated the walls of the cathedrals in Southern Europe, while stained glasses were practiced in Northern Europe. Panel paintings were in vogue by the fifteenth century, taking over even stained glass. Oil painting also set its foot in the fifteenth and sixteenth century, priming in Renaissance Period.

Another distinct feature of Gothic Art was the illuminated manuscripts with realistically rendered figures of the members of the royal family and nobility, especially in the "Très riches heures du Duc de Berry (1413-1416)." Late Gothic Art eventually evolved into 'Classic' Renaissance Art in 1515 AD, bringing the stunning creative period to a historical end.
